I have enjoyed photography for as long as I can remember. I started shooting with nothing more than a simple point and shoot camera.
I then purchased a more advanced point and shoot camera with a zoom lens.
When I started college I enrolled in a basic photography course. I borrowed an old 35mm camera from my dads office. I learned
some basic principles of photography and produced some average work.
When I transferred to Central Missouri State
University I enrolled in another photography course. At Central, I studied black and white and portraiture photography.
I learned a lot from professors such as, Thomas Mitchell, Mitch
Kern, Marcus Ward and Steve Warner.
Another interest of mine is film. I
would have to say film goes as far back as photography if not further. I love
the creative process that develops an idea into a film. I enjoy the process of how
film brings together more than a dozen artists and transforms their ideas into a single flash of light.
A few of my favorites include: Apocalypse Now, Back to the Future, Braveheart,
Dances With Wolves, Donnie Darko, Dr. Strangelove, Fight Club, Heat, Lawrence of Arabia, The Matrix, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's
Nest, Platoon, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Rashomon, Seven Samurai, The Shawshank Redemption, Saving Private Ryan, The Thin
Red Line and Unforgiven.
Want to challenge your mind: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Baraka, Eyes Wide
Shut, Koyaanisqatsi, Mulholland Dr.
I am not sure which I love more, film or music.
Music goes way back to my childhood. My brother and I grew up on music.
I remember going to school with my ghetto blaster so I could listen and record my favorite songs. You can't beat the 80s! More than anything I love music that has something to say. Bands such
as Pink Floyd, The Doors and Tool have created music on that speaks on multiple levels.
The Doors were famous for the meaning behind thier name, which was from a William
Blake poem. "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is: infinite. For
man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern."
Pink Floyd composes music that reflects ones conscienceness
and the dilemmas one finds in life. Many of the albums are personal diaries from the lead singer Roger Waters.
And then there is Tool. To be honest, I am not sure where to start with
this band. I think I will post a brief message from the drummer of the band, Danny Carry, discribing how he
composes his music. "I set up my drums into proportions utilizing the circle and square of the New Jerusalem and
utter a short prayer relating to the principles of the ace of swords from the book of Thoth. I then perform a ritual
utilizing my new found knowledge of the unicursal hexagram to generate a pattern of movement in space relating to Fuller's
vector equilibrium model." Yeah, kinda deep, it gets better, buy a few albums and do a little research, you just might
discover something.
Some of my favorite bands include: Dave
Matthews Band, Foo Fighters, Incubus, Moby, Mooney Suzuki, Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rush, Sublime, Tom
Petty, Tool, The Urge and Widespread Panic.
